Rex Tillerson told reporters on Moscow Wednesday that there is “no firm information to indicate” any Russian involvement in the deadly Sarin gas attack in Syria.

Tillerson had previously stated that “Russia was either incompetent or complicit” in the attack, a fact one reporter pointed to before asking the secretary of state if he stands by those comments after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“With respect to Russia’s complicity or knowledge of the chemical attack, we have no firm information to indicate there was any involvement by Russian forces into this attack.”

“What we do know, and we have a high confidence in our conclusions that the attack was planned and carried out by the regime forces at the direction of Bashar al-Assad,” he added.

It should be noted that Tillerson did not walk back his “incompetent” comment.
