President Donald Trump declared victory for Republicans in a series of tweets Wednesday morning after Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff failed to win outright Tuesday’s special election to replace Republican Rep. Tom Price in the 6th congressional district.

“Dems failed in Kansas and are now failing in Georgia,” Trump tweeted. “Great job Karen Handle! It is now Hollywood vs. Georgia on June 20th.”

That tweet followed another Trump posted Tuesday evening, declaring a major Republican win “despite major outside money.”

Democrats framed the race as a referendum on Trump, asserting that thousands of voters who voted for Trump in November would change their votes out of disappointment in the Republican president. Democratic leadership invested millions into the race, and several big Hollywood names campaigned on behalf of Ossoff Saturday.

Ossoff was the big leader in the race, but he fell short of the 50 percent needed to win the special election outright. He will now advance to a runoff election against Republican Karen Handel on June 20. Democrats are claiming his showing as a win for the party signaling strong resistance to Trump.
