Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer said President Donald Trump should seriously consider dropping his demands for funding the border wall if he wants to prevent the government from shutting down.

Krauthammer, appearing on “Special Report with Bret Baier” Monday, said: “I think in the end, if he (Trump) wants to prevent a shutdown, he’s going to have to give in on it.”

Congress has three days to pass some form of spending bill to keep the government solvent past April 28. Agencies that provide services the government deems “non-essential,” like federal museums or national parks, could get funding temporarily cut if Congress fails to strike an agreement.

Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions made their case Monday for building a wall along the southern U.S.-Mexico border.

In the face of a shutdown, Trump and Sessions pleaded with lawmakers and the public to consider including the $1 billion funding request in their proposed budget. The pair sold it as a necessity for national security.

“The Wall is a very important tool in stopping drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth (and many others)!,” the president tweeted Monday afternoon. “The wall is not built, which it will be, the drug situation will NEVER be fixed the way it should be!”

Sessions said that Congress could find “a host of ways to pay for this wall,”while appearing Monday on “Fox & Friends.” Sessions pointed to charging migrants from Mexico with “fees” and other measures as one potential way to fund the wall.

Following a meeting with reporters Monday, Trump signaled that he might be willing to wait until Republicans are drafting the budget for the fiscal year in October to ask for border wall funding, Reuters reports.
