The mayor of Berkeley, Calif., stated that he wonders if he would get so much “hate” if he were white instead of Latino. This follows the discovery that he belonged to the Facebook group of a local antifascist organization.
“It’s not lost on me that I’m Berkeley’s first Latino mayor,” Mayor Jesse Arreguin stated to The Los Angeles Times Thursday. “I have been outspoken against the Trump administration … I have to wonder if the mayor was white, would we see such hate.”
Arreguin belonged to a Facebook group for By Any Means Necessary, an organization which has engaged in violence at protests. Since media outlets revealed his membership, Arreguin has left the group. (RELATED: Berkeley Mayor Publicly Belongs To Violent Leftist Group)
“We’re a surrogate for the resistance against the Trump administration certainly and for progressive values,” explained the mayor, who says he has received death threats and hate mail.
Arreguin asserted that conservatives like Ann Coulter have manipulated the antifascist protesters and Trump supporters for their own gain. (RELATED: Ann Coulter Cancels Speech After Losing Her Backing)
“It’s engineered intense animosity against Berkeley and that’s a narrative they keep putting out there,” the mayor said.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Arreguin for comment but obtained no reply in time for publication.
