German Chancellor Angela Merkel will call on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to accept more refugees during her visit to the Gulf states this weekend.

Germany has taken in hundreds of thousands of migrants over the past two years. Merkel has promised to never let a similar situation happen again under her watch, and she now demands the Gulf countries step up instead.

A senior German official told the Associated Press that Merkel believes the Gulf states can do more in terms of humanitarian aid.

Merkel will also address Saudi Arabia’s funding of religious institutions that promote a fundamentalist version of Islam. Several Saudi establishments in Germany have recently been closed. A vast number of radical mosques in Germany are funded by Saudi investors, which Berlin has warned about for several years.

“But we must at the same time make clear that the time to look away is past. Wahhabi mosques are financed all over the world by Saudi Arabia,” Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in December, 2015. “In Germany, many dangerous Islamists come from these communities.”
