Hungary managed to cut its daily influx of migrants from several thousand to less than 40 simply by erecting two fences. That wasn’t all. They then staffed the fences with hundreds of police officers and deputized “border hunters.”
Zoltan Kovacs, a spokesman for the Hungarian government, told The Daily Caller News Foundation that the country looked at a number of measures before deciding on the fence.
“It was not unknown what the most effective way to handle illegal border crossings is. Like it or not, and that’s the point we always make, there is no more effective way [to stop] illegal border crossings than building a physical barrier,” Kovacs told TheDCNF.
“You might not like it, it’s not a nice thing, but … the only way to stop illegal border crossings is [to] first build a fence, man it, equip it, and also, in parallel, build up your capabilities in terms of legal confines, legal circumstances to be able to handle what is coming.”
