Democratic groups protested Wednesday at the gates of the White House in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey late Tuesday.
The event was co-hosted by Moveon.org, Indivisible, Americans Against Trump, as well as several other progressive activist groups. The protest began promptly at noon and ran for about an hour before protesters dispersed. Local leaders with the Center for American Progress and MoveOn.org spoke to the crowd, and led chants like “this is what hypocrisy looks like.”
“We now face a constitutional crisis,” Moveon.org’s Campaign Director Jo Comerford said in the official press release. “Donald Trump just fired the one man in America who was leading the most thorough and long-lasting investigation of Donald Trump.”
“Nothing short of the integrity and fate of our democracy is on the line,” Comerford concluded.
The group collected well over 900,000 signatures in an online petition that calls for Congress to appoint a special prosecutor to look into Trump’s alleged connections to the Russian leadership.
Trump mentioned that Comey informed him on three separate occasions that he was not a subject of an ongoing investigation in his public letter to Comey.
