A police officer and a woman were both shot on the West Side of Chicago Friday during an exchange of gunfire, and the cop’s vest was credited for saving him from serious injuries.

The exchange of gunfire that hit a plainclothes officer and a 25-year-old woman occurred at a drug corner in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The officer was with the Harrison District tactical team and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he was expected to be released on Friday night. His bullet-proof vest was credited with saving his life.

The woman, not yet identified, was critically wounded after being shot several times. She was last reported as being in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.

Friday’s shooting followed another violent night in the city run by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff under former President Barack Obama, who vowed to make the city safer.

On Thursday, 16 people were shot and two of the victims were killed, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Despite Emanuel’s pledge to put an end to gun violence in his city, the shooting carnage continues. Emanuel, as previously reported by The Daily Caller, said he planned to put more police officers on the streets in the next few years.

The shooting victims this week will add to the 200th shooting death for 2017 which was surpassed in the city on Tuesday, reported the Chicago Sun Times.
