A mother in South Carolina admitted to beating her six-year-old son after he made a Mother’s Day card for his grandmother and not one for her, and she now faces child cruelty charges.

Shontrell Murphy, 30, was charged  after she admitted to hitting her son, the New York Daily News reported on Saturday.

Cops were called to Murphy’s house in Spartansurg, S.C., and found the grandmother and her grandson, who was crying, local Fox affiliate WBRC reported.

After talking with the boy and his 8-year-old sister, deputies said they determined that the boy had made a Mother’s Day card for his grandmother. When Murphy found out it was not for her, she tore up the card up and repeatedly hit him in the head.

Cops found shards of the handwritten card on the floor. Murphy’s children told police that their mother hit them on a regular basis and that they lived in fear of her.

Murphy did admit to police that she hit her kids, but she did not believe “it was in a hard or violent manner.” She told deputies that she had disciplined her son because of behavioral problems at school, according to local WYFF.com.

The boy, who was transported to the hospital for evaluation, was later released.

Murphy was arrested and charged with cruelty to children. She is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
