Former director of national intelligence James Clapper says our United States institutions are under attack from more than just Russian interference in elections.

He thinks our own president is playing a role as well.

On CNN’s “State Of The Union,” host Jake Tapper asked Clapper if he was concerned with recent developments over the past week, such as the firing of former FBI Director James Comey in the middle of an investigation into the Trump campaign.

Clapper said he found the developments “bothersome” and “worrying,” before explaining that the feels “our institutions are under assault.”

“I think externally–and that’s the big news here, Russian interference in our election system–and I think, as well, our institutions are under assault internally.”

“Internally from the president?” Tapper asked.

“Exactly,” Clapper responded.

He said he feels President Trump is undermining the U.S. system of checks and balances as envisioned by the Founding Fathers.
