A Canadian professor expressed skepticism at college students Tuesday who insist their discussions on campus are traumatizing them.
“Trauma has a technical nature,” Dr. Jordan Peterson of the University of Toronto told the College Fix in an interview. “You can’t just say everything that upsets you is traumatizing.”
College students have been claiming to be traumatized over numerous incidents. Students at the University of Northern Iowa reportedly experienced “post-election trauma” after the 2016 election, while Virginia college student said they suffered from “racial battle fatigue.” University of California-Los Angeles students said they were traumatized after a professor tried to grade their papers. Correcting their work demonstrated the ” effects of white supremacy, patriarchy, heteronormativity,” the students said at the time.
Peterson added that if college students are seriously affected by college life, then they should seek proper psychiatric help.
“It’s virtually impossible that participating in a class is traumatizing,” Peterson said. “If participating in a class discussion is going to traumatize you, then you are sufficiently vulnerable that you should seek psychiatric care or counseling or medication.”
Peterson recently caused outrage on his campus after he refused to use genderless pronouns.
“I don’t recognize another person’s right to determine what pronouns I use to address them. I won’t do it,” Peterson said in October.
Two hundred and fifty of Peterson’s colleagues signed a letter denouncing him for discriminating against transgenders while students at the University of Toronto called his comments “racist” and transphobic.”
