A senior from George Washington University caused commotion during her commencement ceremony Saturday by dropping banners reading “GW Protects Rapists” and “Title IX” and yelling as her alleged assailant crossed the stage.

She was protesting a senior she claims sexually assaulted her, and then allowed to graduate and walk in the ceremony, the DCist reported Monday.

The student’s banner references Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, which states no person may be subject to arbitrary discrimination. The student asserts the college failed her, “For GW to know and acknowledge that there is a rapist on campus and they’re going to do nothing about it—it’s infuriating.”

The case was not resolved, but the university revoked housing and other privileges afforded to students. Her alleged assailant also received deferred suspension for sexual violence.

The GW senior told the DCist in April that she was sexually assaulted in the spring of 2013 and reported the incident to the school in the fall of 2016. She did not disclose whether the alleged sexual assault was rape or not.

The student started a petition to expel her assailant from the University along with an email campaign to have him fired from his job on campus. GW refused to terminate his employment based on a lack of evidence.

Multiple people tried to tear the banner out of her hands and told her that she was “ruining graduation” and being “inappropriate,” according to the GW Hatchet.
