Apple applied to test a 5G network that can download a 120-minute movie in less than one second, the FCC announced Tuesday.
With both AT&T and Verizon planning to have operable 5G networks within the year, Apple’s FCC application solidifies the next step in having iPhones operate on a 5G network.
AT&T has been testing its 5G Network since January.
“Data on our mobile network has increased about 250,000% since 2007,” chief strategy officer John Donovan said. “The majority of that traffic is video. 5G’s promise of greater speed and overall network performance brings huge opportunities.”
So far, Verizon has demonstrated the most robust 5G connection, conducting a test in which the tech giant broke a record with its 6.4gbps connection in a moving car, BGR reported Monday. For reference, that’s 535 times faster than today’s best connections, which only offer 5-12 megabits per second. This will allow users to stream and download higher-quality video with amazing speed, but it’s likely to cost more as well.

AT&T and Verizon aren’t the only wireless companies developing 5G, however; Nokia claims its prototype 5G network has achieved peak speeds of 30Gbps, which is more than most people could even begin to use on their phone.
