The service member’s death comes just two days before Memorial Day in the U.S., and military personnel will likely release his identity after his family is notified. He is only the second to be killed in Syria while training, advising and assisting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State.
The U.S. has hundreds of special operators inside Syria, along with hundreds of U.S. Marines providing fire support to the SDF. The troops are largely confined to the northern part of the country where the SDF and Kurdish militias relied upon by the U.S. operate.
President Donald Trump has indicated that “not many” more U.S. troops will be needed in Syria to defeat ISIS on the battlefield.
