Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders made nearly $1 million in advance for his book, “Our Revolution.”

Sanders, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, got $795,000 in 2016 from MacMillan Publishers for his book, according to 2016 annual financial filings. The senator also received $63,750 in royalty payments that year. In addition to his lavish book deals, the socialist senator brings in over $200,000 a year, which puts him in the top 4 percent of American in terms of income.

Sanders has made a political career out of attacking the wealthy and championing the issues of middle-class Americans. The senator pushed on the 2016 presidential campaign trail for a higher minimum wage, free college education and higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

Despite being a mouthpiece for the average American, Sanders is removed from those who so ardently support him. The senator now owns three homes, including a $600,000 four-bedroom home on the shore of Lake Champlain.

Still, the senator’s net worth is well below that of his fellow colleagues in the Senate. Recent estimates rank Sanders in the bottom quartile of senators in terms of annual income, with a reported income just over $430,000.
