Almost 60 percent of Conservative members want Prime Minister Theresa May to resign following her election failure, according to a survey published Saturday.
The survey by the ConservativeHome website shows just 36 percent of party members believe she should stay on as party leader.
“That two in three of her own members, according to this survey, believe that a Conservative leader should resign is astonishing,” Paul Goodman, the website’s editor and a former member of parliament, said of the survey. “It is the most damning finding in one of our polls that I can remember.”
Two of May’s closest aides resigned Saturday after party members issued an ultimatum to the prime minister to either fire them or face a leadership contest. Few senior Tory members have publicly backed May and some have referred to her as an “interim leader” since the results were announced.
A vote of no-confidence can be triggered if at least 15 percent of Conservative MPs call for new leadership. May would be forced to resign if she failed to win a majority in a subsequent vote.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has emerged as the favorite to replace May. Brexit Secretary David Davis and Home Secretary Amber Rudd are also being mentioned as possible successors.
