An eleven-year-boy killed a massive brown bear that attacked his uncle as they walked through the woods to go fishing in Alaska Friday.
Elliot Clark, his uncle Craig Stoltzfus and two of Clark’s cousins were walking through the woods in Port Frederick, Alaska when a brown bear came down a trail and began attacking Stolzfus. The bear reportedly charged Stolzfus so quickly that he did not have time to take the rifle off his shoulder. Eleven-year-old Clark was the only other one armed in the group and began shooting at the bear that was attacking his uncle.
The bear plowed through the group of four, knocking them to the side of the trail, with just Clark left standing in front of his cousin, according to a report by a local Juneau Empire, a local Alaskan news source. Clark raised his pump action shotgun and fired a birdshot round at the bear, which is a less powerful shotgun round. (RELATED: Bearpocalypse Strikes Alaska As Bear Maulings On The Rise)
“His first shot was a light load of birdshot. That first shot hit him in the shoulder and did absolutely nothing. The next shot hit him in the nose and traveled down through the neck,” Clark’s father said to Juneau Empire.
The third shot dropped the brown bear to the ground. The bear was so close when Clark shot it that there were powder burns on the bear’s mouth. The bear was still alive and began sliding towards Clark’s feet.
“As the bear slid past him and came to a stop, he put a kill shot in him,” Clarks father said.
The family said they saw several bears in the area for a couple days hence why they have been carrying guns for their protection.
“It’s not just a matter of skill or preparedness. It can happen to anybody and it can go wrongly, especially a kid,” Clark’s father added. “We pray for our kids every day and in my mind that’s the biggest factor right there.”
