German Chancellor Angela Merkel strongly criticized President Donald Trump, ahead of their meeting in Hamburg, Germany, Thursday.

Merkel, in particular, criticized Trump’s “winners and losers” foreign policy, arguing the U.S. should be more interested in cooperating with other countries regarding climate change and free trade, according to The Independent.

Merkel’s party previously described U.S. relations with Germany as a “friendship” when Barack Obama was president in 2013. Now, America is simply described as Germany’s “most important partner.”

“We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands,” Merkel stated after discussions with Trump at the G7 NATO talks, according to Express.

Trump received heavy backlash from European leaders over his decision to his withdraw from the Paris agreement on climate change, describing it as a “very unfair” economically.

“This agreement is less about the climate and more about other countries gaining a financial advantage over the United States,” Trump said.

Merkel also continues to contrast the policies of Donald Trump by committing to globalization. The German leader stated she wanted “no maximum quota” on the amount of refugees let into Germany.

“Whoever believes the problems of this world can be solved by isolationism and protectionism is making a tremendous error,” said Merkel.
