Will People Finally Buy Jewelry Online If It Is 80 Percent Off?

I’m presently reading a book called “The Everything Store” about the rise of Amazon. One of the interesting anecdotes in the book is how the company bet heavily on jewelry in the early going, thinking that they could replace jewelry stores in the same way they were making bookstores obsolete. When I read that, I couldn’t believe it. They thought people wanted to buy jewelry online? That’s ridiculous!

Anyway, although they obviously failed to dominate the jewelry industry, Amazon still does sell jewelry. And today there is actually a one-day-only sale on jewelry. In total, 176 pieces of jewelry are included in the deal, which is promoted as “up to 30 percent off.” Just clicking on the options, however, will show much bigger discounts that that. Take a look at some of the first items I clicked on:

Now, there are likely many more items closer to 30 percent off than 80 percent off. But the mere possibility that some pieces are so discounted makes the sale worth exploring. Who knows, maybe you will even prove Amazon right (nearly two decades later) and actually buy jewelry online.
