Political commentator and columnist Charles Krauthammer said Friday that the White House’s defense of the Russia narrative as Democratic nonsense is “officially dead.”

In his Washington Post op-ed titled “Bungled collusion is still collusion,” Krauthammer said he had been puzzled by the claims that President Donald Trump and the White House had been colluding with Russia, due to the fact there was no solid evidence. However, when Donald Trump Jr. released a chain of emails Tuesday, Krauthammer believed that pushed the Russia scandal into a new phase, one from which it will be impossible for Trump to recover.

“The evidence is now shown. This is not hearsay, not fake news, not unsourced leaks. This is an email chain released by Donald Trump Jr. himself,” Krauthammer said. (RELATED: Emails Show Trump Jr. Knew Information May Have Come From Russian Government)

Both Trump Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya, the lawyer involved in the correspondence, have denied that any damaging information was shared during their meeting.

“What matters is what Donald Jr. thought going into the meeting, as well as Jared Kushner and then-campaign manager Paul Manafort, who were forwarded the correspondence, invited to the meeting, and attended,” Krauthammer said. “There is no statute against helping a foreign hostile power meddle in an American election. What Donald Jr. — and Kushner and Manafort — did may not be criminal. But it is not merely stupid … it is also deeply wrong, a fundamental violation of any code of civic honor.”

Krauthammer said he would leave it to the lawyers to decide the legality of Trump Jr.’s emails and the meeting.

“You don’t need a lawyer to see that the Trump defense — collusion as a desperate Democratic fiction designed to explain away a lost election — is now officially dead,” Krauthammer concluded.
