A toilet charity that renamed an Indian village after President Donald Trump held a ceremony Tuesday to celebrate the naming, contrary to the wishes of Indian officials.
The Sulabh International charity unofficially named the village “Trump Sulabh Village,” and the organization is dedicated to building simple pit toilets across the country for free in an effort to increase better sanitation in India. (RELATED: Indian Toilet Charity Renames Village After Trump)
Officials allegedly asked the charity not to hold the event celebrating the renaming, according to the Washington Post.
“We repeatedly asked them not to hold this event, but they did not listen,” said Mani Ram Sharma, the district’s deputy commissioner. “They did not ask for any permission, and none would have been given if they had.”
Officials also took issue with the village’s renaming, saying it was illegal and that Sulabh had never gotten clearance to name the village after Trump, WaPo reported.
The village elders had given their permission to hold the celebration and were excited at the large “Trump Village” billboards that had been brought into the village for the event.
“It was all fictitious and a fraud event by the organizers aimed at collecting money across the country and abroad,” Sharma said, demanding that police tear down the signs.
The villagers did not heed Sharma’s request and instead celebrated emphatically. Children waved around Trump’s photo and signs reading, “Our Trump Village Will Be Clean!”
