The situation unfolding between the Detroit Lions and former all-pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson is turning into a nightmare.

Johnson retired over a year ago, and things with his former team have not been going well. On one side of the coin, the Lions have invited Johnson to training camp in an attempt to smooth things over after Megatron admitted he retired in part because he felt the Lions were going absolutely nowhere. His body was banged up, and he didn’t think it made sense to kill himself for a team that couldn’t win. It’s a pretty simple concept to understand.

Things appeared to spiral further downward after speculation began that Johnson would come out of retirement to join the Oakland Raiders, just as former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch had done. The Lions would essentially have no choice but to release him due to his contract situation and their limited cap space.

This is a nightmare scenario for Lions fans everywhere, myself included. Johnson was one of the most physically gifted athletes in the history of American sports. He was capable of making catches that should never have been possible, and yet, the Lions didn’t do anything other than draft Matthew Stafford to help him. He rarely had a solid number two option to take pressure off of him, and the Lions offensive line has been historically pretty bad. Management drove him out of town, and now Lions fans might have to watch him join one of the best teams in the league.

Outstanding job by everybody involved in the Lions ownership and management. First you drove out Barry Sanders and then you did the same to Calvin Johnson. Absolutely outstanding.
