The U.S. Treasury Department announced Friday afternoon that it would impose sanctions against ISIS fighter Malik Ruslanovish Barkhanoev.

The Treasury is designating Barkhanoev as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, a classification under an executive order instituted by former President George W. Bush that targets terrorists and those that provide support to terrorist organizations.

With the new designation, all property and interests in property of Barkhanoev subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked. U.S. citizens are also largely prohibited from doing business with him, according to a release given to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Treasury is targeting a violent individual who has served as a fighter for ISIS,” Office of Foreign Assets Control Director John E. Smith said in a statement. “This action, which was taken concurrently with new UN sanctions, underscores the United States’ resolve to work with our international partners to further restrict terrorists’ access to the international financial system.”

In a unanimous vote, the UN signed a Security Council resolution Thursday to renew the UN sanctions targeting ISIS. The resolution imposes sanctions against eight individuals with ties to ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
