A majority of registered voters think it would be inappropriate for President Donald Trump to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller over the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll found that 48 percent of U.S. voters believe it would not be right for Trump to remove Mueller, compared to only 22 percent that say it would be appropriate for the president to fire Mueller.

The poll showed a bipartisan split, with a large majority of Democrats believing that firing Mueller would be inappropriate, 67 percent to 11 percent. Most Republican voters say that it would be appropriate, 37 percent to 29 percent.

The White House has been very critical of Mueller, and Trump has previously called the hiring of Mueller as special counsel “ridiculous.” (RELATED: The White House’s Attacks On Special Counsel Mueller Continue)

Mueller has hired at least seven Democratic donors to join his investigative team, including one attorney that donated almost $34,000 to federal Democratic candidates. However, the poll shows that a large group is still unsure about Mueller’s investigation. Three out of every 10 voters did not have an opinion about whether or not Trump should dismiss Mueller.

The poll surveyed 3,981 registered voters and ran from July 20 through July 24.
