Blake Lively feels “awakened” in the wake of last year’s presidential election which she says made her “more aware” of sexism and other forms of discrimination.
In an interview with Glamour Magazine published Monday the 29-year-old actress spoke about her role in the upcoming movie “All I See Is You” and on women’s roles in Hollywood and how she was “awakened” by the election.

In the movie, Lively plays a blind woman named Gina whose relationship with her husband changes when her sight is restored. When asked whether Lively thought of her as a metaphor for “power dynamics between women and men,” the interview took a turn to politics.
“I saw her as a singular character. But I wasn’t as awakened at that point–it was before the election,” Lively told Glamour. “I felt like women had a long way to go, but not as far as I realize now. I don’t know if I would read it differently [now],” she admitted.
“It made me more aware, more conscious, more sensitive,” she continued, speaking about the election. “Not just of sexism but of discrimination in all areas–class, gender, race.”

“I had realized that there were problems [before],” Lively added before detailing some of her work outside of the movie industry. Outside of acting, “The Shallows” star devotes much of her time to bringing awareness to sex trafficking.
“I so appreciate the purity of my own childhood, and the idea that a child doesn’t have the opportunity to be a child is devastating,” Lively said.
