In a statement on Monday, George and Amal Clooney said The Clooney Foundation’s commitment aims to prevent the thousands of young Syrians from becoming “a lost generation.”

“They have been victims of geography and circumstance, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope,” the Clooneys said in a press release. “Our goal with this initiative is to help provide Syrian refugee children with an education and put them on a path to be the future leaders their generation desperately needs.”

George and Amal Clooney established The Clooney Foundation for Justice last year. Their goal is to advocate for and support equity in classrooms, courtrooms and communities all around the world.

Roughly 200,000 Syrian refugee children in Lebanon don’t have proper schooling. The Clooney Foundation plans to open the seven public schools this year.
