A Palestinian man confessed Wednesday to killing his pregnant Jewish girlfriend, telling police that he murdered her to save the Palestinian people.

The 29-year-old Jewish woman, Michal Halimi, was missing for more than two months before police found her body May 24, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Police determined that she was eight months pregnant when she died, Newsweek reported.

Police reported that she had left her home on the West Bank to move in with her boyfriend, and that the two intended to wed, according to Facebook posts. She was however, married at the time to an Israeli man, Aharon Halimi, who denied that his wife was having an affair. “She was five months pregnant when she disappeared. Our relationship was very good, and we were waiting for the child. This is entirely a nationalistic issue and not a romance,” he told reporters.

The mystery went unsolved until police — after multiple interrogations of the boyfriend, Muhammad Harouf — noticed inconsistencies in his recount of what had happened, giving them cause to continue their search and investigation of Harouf.

After additional interrogations, Harouf finally confessed to murdering Halimi by strangling and stoning her, after which he buried her deep in the ground. He claimed he killed Halimi in order to free the Palestinians currently being held in Israeli prisons, according to Haaretzbut interrogators believe that his crime reflects a deranged man rather than a political statement.

“I’ll kill all the Jews,” Harouf yelled at the Jerusalem Magistrate court hearing Wednesday.

Harouf is currently being held in custody.
