China’s communist government fired two officials after one tried getting a promotion by casting spells and setting up an altar to carry out the magic, according to Chinese media.

Casting spells are considered part of superstitious folk beliefs, which are illegal in the communist party. The Chinese government eliminated Huang Xiowen of Hunan province after asking “others to set up an altar to cast spells” in the hopes of being promoted, according to Xinhua news agency.

Tang Yuansong, the other government official fired, attended five Feng Shui courses, a Chinese art of organizing items to create harmony used to bring good fortune, which cost $8,083. He falsely claimed them as business expenses for “investigation tours” beginning in 2008, Reuters reported Friday.

Both members have been expelled from the party and will be investigated for involvement with other suspicious acts.
