Romanian soldiers assigned to NATO’s Resolute Support training mission foiled an insider attack Saturday, killing a member of the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) who had opened fire on a group of military advisers in southern Afghanistan.
One of the Romanian troops was wounded in the shootout, which occurred following a training session in Kandahar province, according to a statement from Resolute Support headquarters in Kabul. An ANCOP officer was also wounded in the crossfire.
“The advisers had completed a scheduled law enforcement training and were preparing to return to base when they were attacked by a member of the Afghan National Civil Order Police,” the statement said.
Romanian soldiers, who were providing security support to the NATO trainers, returned fire and killed the attacker. The incident is currently under investigation, officials said.
Saturday’s insider attack, which comes as U.S. officials weigh sending more troops to Afghanistan, is the latest in a series of “green-on-blue” shootings of NATO military personnel by Afghan soldiers and police.
In June, three American soldiers were killed and seven more wounded in a pair of incidents that took place in the span of a single week, reports Reuters. Prior to those attacks, two Romanian special forces troops were killed and another wounded in May 2016 when a local Afghan policeman opened fire on them.
The Romanian soldier wounded Saturday is being treated at a Kandahar Airfield hospital, while the ANCOP officer is undergoing treatment at an Afghan medical facility, officials said.
