There might not be a whole lot of experiences in this world more painful than having to sit through the newly-released movie “Detroit.”
I had a family member in town over the weekend, and we had some time to kill. I made the horrific mistake of getting tickets to see the film about the 1967 riots. I had seen the intense trailers for the film, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t initially excited to see the movie.
The plot of the film, according to IMDB, is, “Amidst the chaos of the Detroit Rebellion, with the city under curfew and as the Michigan National Guard patrolled the streets, three young African American men were murdered at the Algiers Motel.
What the IMDB description doesn’t tell you as a viewer is the film is 143 minutes of never-ending propaganda about how much white people suck. I won’t spoil the movie, but if somebody asked me to describe the film I’d simply say, “White cops are awful, white people are awful, white women who have sex with men are whores and white people get a lot of pleasure in killing innocent black people.”
I don’t want to spoil the movie, so I’ll steer clear of specific plot points. It’s still pretty easy to get a grasp of this propaganda piece, so impressive Joseph Goebbels would be taking notes, without needing the plot ruined.
I went into the theater expecting a film along the lines of “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” given the fact director Kathryn Bigelow also directed those two films, both of which were excellent. I didn’t expect to pay money so I could be told how shitty of a person I am because I’m white. Here’s a quick fact check; white people don’t inherently enjoy murdering black people.
Of course, you’d never know that from the film. If an alien watched “Detroit” they’d think murdering black people is the favorite hobby of white people everywhere.
To be clear, there were three people killed at the Algiers Motel and police were put on trial, but nobody knows for certain what happened. The film doesn’t depict the events with any wiggle room. They present the police as cold-blooded killers with a thirst for the blood of black men and white women who have sex with them.
Interestingly enough the final shot of the movie is basically a massive disclaimer about how liberties were taken with the events. It’s likely lawyers recommended the disclaimer so surviving family members couldn’t see for libel and defamation. Naturally, you have to wait until the end of the film before the viewers are told what they’re seeing might not be a true. It probably would have thrown off the “white people are soulless killers” vibe if they put the disclaimer in the opening scenes.
You can find plenty of videos on YouTube that’ll successfully tell you white people are awful without having to spend the money at the movie theater to see “Detroit” and get the same message.
I have no idea which parts of the movie are accurate and which parts are complete fiction. I imagine that’s the whole point and exactly what Bigelow wanted. It’s impossible to know what happened, but plenty of people will see the movie and believe it’s a work of factual events instead of an interpretation of what happened at the Algiers Motel. Even liberal blog Slate admits there are factual differences between the film and real life. Never a good sign when even Slate falls entirely in line with your social justice warrior propaganda.
Save your money and find something else to see. This garbage film should be thrown in the trash can and forgotten about.
