The service member was killed during a partnered operation with the Afghan National Security Forces, where other U.S. forces were also injured.
The service member is the 10th American to die in Afghanistan in 2017, many of whom were killed in the same region fighting the terrorist group. The group controls a relatively small amount of territory but has used it to launch multiple complex attacks on the capital city of Kabul, killing hundreds with its brutal tactics.
Further details regarding the incident and identification of the service-member will become available following notification of next of kin.
