Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced Friday that one American citizen was killed in a terror attack in Barcelona, Spain.
14 people were killed and over 100 were injured when a van rammed through a crowd of pedestrians in the La Rambla area of Barcelona on Thursday. Several people were reportedly arrested in connection to that incident, although it is unclear if the driver of the van is in custody. In another incident, police shot and killed four terror suspects.
Tillerson made the announcement that an American was killed in the attack during a press briefing early Friday.
“I want to acknowledge that we have now received word and confirmed the death of one American citizen in the terrorist attacks in Spain,” Tillerson said. “We are still confirming the injuries and deaths of others, but obviously we express out deepest sympathies to the loved ones of this individual and obviously to the others who have suffered loss of life.”
“We offer our thoughts and prayers to their families as they’re going to be dealing with a very very tough few days ahead of them,” he stated.
