The Conservative American Action Network launched an ad campaign in support of Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio on Monday, shortly after he announced his support for a tax reform bill.

“When it comes to reforming our nation’s tax system, top Democrats agree,” the ad begins. “Simpler, fairer taxes mean more jobs and higher take home pay. Thank Congressman Tim Ryan for fighting to cut taxes for working families.”

WATCH:

Ryan made the comments in question on an episode of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last week, and appeared to support some key Republican ideas in the hopes of creating wealth.

“I think we need to simplify the tax code, I think we need to lower the corporate tax rate,” Ryan said. “We can’t just be the party of redistribution of wealth, we’ve got to be the party of creation of wealth.”

This is the first ad the group ran in support of a sitting Democratic member of the House. The group reports it will spend at least “5 figures” on the ad, which will only air in Ryan’s district in Ohio.

Ryan comes from a relatively safe district. He’s won reelection every year since 2003 and earned a staggering 69 percent of the vote during the Republican surge of 2014. He also earned nearly 68 percent of the vote during the 2016 presidential elections.

Essentially, the ad isn’t going to help Ryan in 2018, but the spending could serve as a signal to other Democrats on the fence that conservatives are willing to engage either party based on members’ votes on the upcoming tax reform vote.
