A German male nurse allegedly killed 86 patients by giving them overdoses of heart medication, case investigators reported Monday.

Niels Hoegel, 40, reportedly killed at least 86 hospital patients by intentionally giving them an overdose of heart medicine. The former nurse admitted that he enjoyed giving patients cardiac arrest, since he got a thrill from being able to resuscitate them, abcnews reported Monday.

Hoegel worked at a hospital in Delmenhorst, Germany from 2003 to 2005 where he was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders at the hospital. He was then sentenced to life in prison. He previously worked at Oldenburg hospital from 1999 to 2002, and confessed to investigators that he also killed patients at that location.

Prosecutors originally believed that Hoegel killed two people, The Detroit News reported Monday. However, due to examining the bodies at both hospitals, investigators are now claiming that he killed at least 84 additional patients.

“Eighty-four killings … leave us speechless,” Oldenburg Police Chief Johann Kuehme told reporters. “And as if all that were not enough, we must realize that the real dimension of the killings by Niels H. is likely many times worse.”

Kuehme added that if authorities acted sooner, some of these deaths could have been prevented.
