A group of Latino students at the University of Virginia demanded Sunday “immediate disciplinary actions” for university police officers who allegedly confronted some of the group members Friday night.

UVA’s Latinx Student Alliance alleges the police demanded the dispersion of a party and that their treatment differed from that of white students who were also partying that same night, according to a statement posted to the group’s Facebook page.

“Based off of these interactions, it clear [sic] that discrimination due to the Lawn residents’ skin color occurred on a space that UVA promotes as a welcoming and representative area for students,” said the Latinx Student Alliance. “The Latinx Student Alliance demands immediate disciplinary actions towards these officers and we demand that our Lawn be policed in a uniform manner.”

The student organization insists that one of the two white male officers in the alleged interaction “aggressively interrupted [the student host] with an asserting [sic] ‘LISTEN'” and that the officers had a “combative demeanor and intimidating tone,” even though the party was ending and there was a bigger and noisier event elsewhere in the vicinity.

“Discrepancies in the way the Lawn is policed perpetuates institutional racism and a lack of care and respect for people of color at this institution,” said the Latinx Student Alliance. “We urge all students of color to stay strong and continue to stand with pride as the color of your skin does not invalidate your right to equality.”

The student group claims that officers told other students of color to end their parties that night, but only asked white students to send away their guests who were under 21 years old.

“The last thing that needs to happen, especially from an institution that was unresponsive  and absent on Friday, August 11th, is to target a group of minorities in such an aggressive and inappropriate manner.” (RELATED: Stunning Footage Shows Man Open Fire In Charlottesville)
