An elderly couple married at a hospital In Rochester, N.Y., Monday, after reuniting 50 years after first meeting.

Fifty years ago, Jennifer Meyerink, 72, and Stephen Walbert, 73, met in Trinidad and Tobago while Walbert was stationed with the U.S. Navy and working as a disc jockey for the base. They only reconnected two years ago via social media, following the death of their respective spouses.

“She was at the top of the stairs looking down at me and I was at the bottom of the stairs looking up at her. I was nervous, oh, God, I was so nervous. I just walked up and my legs were shaking. As soon as I saw her, I knew that flame was still burning. I knew I had to have her back,” said Walbert, reported USA Today.

Meryerink was living in Canada and Walbert was living in Wisconsin at the time they reconnected, reported AP.

Walbert soon moved to Canada to be with her. Walbert was later diagnosed with Leukemia in 2016 and the couple moved to Rochester, N.Y., where his son lives, for treatment.

Walbert is currently undergoing treatment at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, dressed in Elvis costumes since they are huge fans of the singer. Despite not knowing how much time they will have left together, the couple is determined to make every moment count.

“I have a firm belief — one day at a time,” said Walbert, adding that, “That’s the way you’ve got to live. You just cannot look to the future and never look to the past. Today is today. Tomorrow is tomorrow. But tomorrow I’ll have a wife by my side. I couldn’t be happier or luckier.”

The family will determine whether to continue treatment or go to hospice care in the coming days.
