A homeless man reportedly broke into a New York City apartment Wednesday, stabbed a mother and toddler inside, and tried to throw the baby off the third-floor fire escape, only to be thwarted by onlooking neighbors.

Christian Valdez, 28, allegedly broke into the 37-year-old woman’s apartment, reported abc7. Valdez attacked the woman and stabbed her in the abdomen, and as she tried to protect her baby, Valdez struck the woman with a glass bottle and took the child, threatening to throw the little girl off the building. He cut the 3-year-old’s elbow in the process, according to NY1.

Two neighbors witnessed the scene from the street below and rushed to aid the mother and child, trying to dissuade Valdez by throwing different household items at him.

“I kicked the door open, I ran in and I went to the fire escape and I told him, ‘Let her go! Let her go!'” said the neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. “Luckily somebody else came through this side and grabbed the baby, some guys, and they brought her down through the fire escape.”

A group of men managed to hold down the attacker until police arrived at the scene. Police took Valdez into custody, and he faces charges of assault and burglary.

The two mother and child are in stable condition at Lincoln Hospital.
