A toddler was thrown from a car during an altercation between his parents early Wednesday morning, and he remains in critical condition in Memphis, Tenn.

A 1-year-old boy was tossed out of a car during a domestic dispute between his parents, The Commerical Appeal reported. Officers were called to the scene at 3 a.m. to find that a gunshot had been fired at a Honda Accord, and the toddler had somehow been ejected from the car during the dispute.

“My husband heard the mother hollering ‘my baby’ and then we called the police,” said Janice Austin, a resident of the apartment building outside of which the incident took place. “It was scary to wake up to police cars and someone screaming. I’m praying for the family.”

The child was immediately taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition, Fox13 reported.

“The child was thrown from the vehicle and is at Le Bonheur in extremely critical condition and this is an ongoing investigation,” a Memphis Police Felony Response unit spokseman said.

Both of the parents have been detained.
