U.K. schools have begun adopting a “Good Schools Guide” to rate whether their teachers and policies are transgender friendly.

The move comes after some parents have expressed discontent over school policies regarding transgender students. Some parents have even removed their transgender children from U.K. public schools, citing inadequate protection and anti-discrimination policies as the main reasons for pulling their children out of the school system.

“Over about the last 18 months or so, I have noticed this issue building up,” said Bernadette John, a director at the guide’s consulting service, according to the Telegraph. “Families are coming to us when they feel they are left with no option but to pull their transgender child out of a school.”

Inspectors from the Good Schools Guide (GSG) will also be testing school principals and teachers on how they address issues that arise from having transgender students in the classroom, John said. She added that teachers would also be evaluated on what they allow in terms of gender pronouns, dress, names and more.

The GSG program will also examine levels of inclusion and transgender policies at schools across the U.K. “We had an editorial conversation about this a few days ago,” John told the Telegraph, explaining that GSG members would be talking to headmasters about how to best produce high transgender-friendliness ratings.

John added that many schools are going to great lengths to accommodate transgender students, but that some administrators are still telling children and their parents that they don’t have specific policies for transgenders regarding uniforms and bathrooms. Schools that were especially transgender-friendly will be mentioned in GSG’s review.

A British couple recently took their son out of school after he faced disciplinary action for accidentally referring to his 6-year-old classmate as a boy, when this classmate had asked to be called a girl.

The GSG office did not return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment in time for publication.
