Police have charged Ahmed Hassan, 18, with attempted murder in connection to the Sept. 15 bombing on a London subway train that injured dozens.
Hassan, who reportedly came to the United Kingdom as an Iraqi refugee, was arrested Saturday in the city of Dover as he tried to flee the country. Authorities list him as a resident of Sunbury, Surrey in southern England.
Hassan is accused of attempting to “murder persons traveling on a District Line train” and of using a chemical compound to cause an explosion. He will appear in court for the first time Friday.
Three suspects remain in custody, while two others were released Thursday without charge. Yahyah Farroukh from Syria was initially named as a suspect and his mother allegedly suffered a heart attack after hearing the news of his arrest. Farroukh was released Thursday and his boss is now demanding answers, according to The Telegraph.
Hassan reportedly lived at the home of Ron and Penelope Jones, whose home in Sunbury-on-Thames was raided over the weekend.
The couple was honored by Queen Elizabeth in 2009 after taking hundreds of refugees over the years.
“We do it because we find it rewarding,” Penelope Jones said after receiving recognition from the royal family, according to BBC. “Helping other people is rewarding, and I treat them how I would like to be treated if I was in that situation.”
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities have found no evidence that ISIS was involved.
