Singer Stevie Wonder took a knee Saturday night at a music concert to express his desire to pray for all of America.
Wonder, performing at the Global Citizens Festival, knelt down on both knees right before his performance to take a moment to pray for world leaders and America.
“I didn’t come here to preach, but I’m telling you: our spirits must be in the right place,” Wonder said, kneeling with his son Kwame Morris. “Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America. But not just one knee. I’m taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world and our globe. Amen.”
Wonder seemed to show solidarity with other athletes who have decided to take a knee in silent protest during the national anthem. President Donald Trump responded to those protests Friday night, suggesting that players who don’t stand during the anthem should get fired immediately.
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out. He’s fired. He’s fired!'” Trump said at an Alabama rally for candidate Luther Strange.
