President Donald Trump congratulated Roy Moore for winning the Alabama GOP Senate primary Tuesday night, despite having thrown his support behind Moore’s opponent, Luther Strange.

“Congratulations to Roy Moore on his Republican Primary win in Alabama. Luther Strange started way back & ran a good race. Roy, WIN in Dec!” Trump said in his tweet. Moore defeated Strange Tuesday night and now will face off against Democratic candidate Doug Jones for Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Senate seat.

Trump tweeted out messages of support for Strange for months, urging Alabama voters to elect Strange in the GOP primary because he would “drain the swamp.” Trump also expressed concern that should Strange not win the primary, he would face criticism in the press.

“They’re not going to say we picked up 25 points in a very short period of time,” Trump said at a Friday rally for Strange. “They’re going to say, ‘Donald Trump, the President of the United States, was unable to pull his candidate across the line. It is a terrible, terrible moment for Trump.'”

At the Friday rally, Trump admitted that should Moore win, he would throw his full support behind him.
