America’s top diplomat revealed Saturday that the U.S. is in contact with North Korea.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in Beijing that the U.S. has a few direct lines of communication with Pyongyang, and is in the process of probing whether negotiations on the growing nuclear threat are possible, according to multiple reports.

“We are probing. We have lines of communication with Pyongyang,” Tillerson explained. “We are not in a dark situation, a blackout. We have a couple, three channels open to Pyongyang.”

It is unclear if a substantive dialogue could take place, given present tensions between Pyongyang and Washington.

Since President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. will “totally destroy” North Korea if attacked, the rogue regime has been on edge, threatening to test a staged thermonuclear weapon in the Pacific and shoot down American aircraft that fly too close. Kim Jong Un even issued an unprecedented direct threat to Trump, warning that he will tame the U.S. president with fire.

North Korea threatened Saturday to turn the U.S. into a “sea of flames.” While this is common for the North, such rhetoric is not exactly conducive to productive talks.

South Korean intelligence has reportedly detected the movement of ballistic missiles in North Korea over the past few days. Such shifts may be normal, or they could be preparation for another provocative test.
