San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz said on MSNBC Tuesday that President Trump throwing paper towels is not in “the spirit of the America.”
While helping relief efforts in Puerto Rico, Trump passed out rolls of paper towels by shooting them like basketballs into the crowd. The move angered Cruz, who called it “terrible” and “abominable.”
“It’s about saving lives, it’s not about politics,” Cruz said. “This terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people…it does not embody the spirit of the American nation.”
“That is not the land of the free, the home of the brave, the beacon of democracy that people have learned to love across the world,” she complained. “He has insulted the people of Puerto Rico…he kind of minimized our suffering here.”
Cruz has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria for the past week, prompting Trump to slam her on his Twitter account.
