WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul Ryan praised President Trump Friday for decertifying the nuclear agreement struck with Iran by the Obama administration in 2015.

“The nuclear agreement struck by the previous administration with Iran is fatally flawed. Not only did it codify Tehran’s domestic enrichment capability, but once key restraints expire in the coming years, the regime will be free to pursue nuclear weapons under the guise of international legitimacy,” Ryan said.

“All the while, Iran has continued to test-fire ballistic missiles and finance its terrorist proxies across the globe. Simply enforcing a fatally flawed agreement is not sufficient. I support President Trump’s decision to reevaluate this dangerous deal, and the House will work with his administration to counter Iran’s range of destabilizing activities.”

Trump criticized the Iran nuclear agreement throughout his campaign and promised to “tear up.” He has decided to ask Congress to amend the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA). This mandates the president’s certification of the nuclear agreement every  three months, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters late Thursday.

Trump will ask Congress to consider amending INARA, Tillerson said “to put in place some very firm trigger points,” so if Iran violates any of those points sanctions would be imposed.

Those “trigger points” relate to Iran’s ballistic missile program and support of terrorist organizations.

Additionally, Trump will direct the Treasury Department through his executive orders to impose further actions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s support of terrorist activity in the region.
