The “white genocide” professor suspended after blaming the Las Vegas massacre on white people not getting “what they want” is back teaching at Drexel University — but only online.
Drexel University announced that it would allow politics professor George Ciccariello-Maher to teach his courses online after placing him on administrative leave in early October, reported Inside Higher Ed. The communist professor has received a deluge of support from academics, organizations, and fans on social media.
“In order to ensure academic continuity while preserving safety on campus, the terms of Professor George Ciccariello-Maher’s administrative leave have been modified to allow him to teach remotely for the duration of the term,” said the school to The Daily Caller News Foundation. “He will resume teaching his two scheduled courses online.”
The American Political Science Association called Drexel’s decision to place the professor on leave “disturbing,” claiming “pressures are growing on many universities…to curb controversial political expression.” The Society for the Study of Social Problems suggested that Drexel not be “intimidated” by threats, which the school claimed it received after Ciccariello-Maher’s tweets, and intimated that the university reinstate the professor if it had not conducted a review before suspending him.
“Drexel University is capitulating to racist internet trolls’ smear campaign and right-wing crusade to undermine academic freedom,” reads a petition signed by more than 1,000 academics that asks Drexel to reconsider its decision.
“White people and men are told that they are entitled to everything. This is what happens when they don’t get what they want,” said Ciccariello-Maher the day after the Las Vegas massacre. “The narrative of white victimization has been gradually built over the past 40 years.”
The professor previously made headlines in December for saying “all I want for Christmas is white genocide,” which he claimed was satirizing the “white genocide” theory espoused by the alt-right. (RELATED: University Professor: I Want ‘White Genocide’ For Christmas)
The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a nonprofit defending free speech on college campuses, reported Friday that a Russia-affiliated Twitter account abetted the spread of this December tweet.
Ciccariello-Maher responded “LOL, Fuck The Daily Caller” when contacted for comment.
