After causing a seven-car pileup in Manhattan, a driver attempted to steal a fire truck while seven firefighters were still inside Sunday.

Devon Brandon, 36, tried to steal a fire truck after abandoning his own vehicle, claiming that someone was chasing him, the Daily Mail reported. Brandon had previously hit seven cars in his Enterprise box truck before attempting to take off in the fire truck, climbing into the driver’s seat while the firefighters attempted to pull him out.

“I had to keep them both apart until a bunch of firemen intervened,” witness Bill Walker said. “I held him until the fireman took him off my hands. Then he started mixing it up with the fireman pretty good.”

Brandon, a convicted drug dealer, was on parole at the time of the incident, and was subsequently charged with reckless endangerment and assault, as well as drug-impaired driving, drug possession and refusing to take a breath test, the Daily Mail reported. Cocaine and marijuana were also found on the floor of his truck and in his backpack, according to the New York Daily News.
