The professor injured by campus rioters after author and scholar Charles Murray’s speech at Middlebury College said Thursday that “national security depends on” using free speech instead of violence.
Allison Stanger, a politics and economics professor at Middlebury, made the remark when addressing the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee, reported The College Fix.
Middlebury professor Allison Stanger suffered a concussion and neck injury when she was assisting Murray, whom she had invited to the campus, in leaving the venue in March.
But Stanger also argued for faculty control over speakers invited to college campuses.
“At these public universities, I think we’re seeing these provocateurs seeking to set up talks that don’t really have faculty sponsorship,” she said, referring to white nationalist Richard Spencer. “So, let the faculty lead, and I think we’ll go in the right direction.”

“When I was a student in the 1960s at Vanderbilt University, the John Birch Society wanted my political science professor fired,” the Tennessee Republican said. “They said he was a communist because he thought World War I was a mistake.”
