Tiger Woods is expected to plead guilty to reckless driving in court Friday in order to avoid a driving under the influence conviction after police found him asleep on the side of the road inside his Mercedes in May.
Woods is scheduled to submit a guilty to the lesser charge and be sentenced to probation, Reuters reported Friday.The 41-year-old golfer surprised police the night of his arrest by blowing a 0.00 on a breathalyzer test despite being clearly incoherent. A toxicology report later found he had five drugs in his system.
“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Woods said in a statement after news spread of his arrest.
As a first-time DUI offender with no prior criminal convictions, Woods would be eligible for a probation program in Palm Beach, Flordia. If he completes the program, he could have the reckless driving conviction erased from his record.
Woods has insisted that his incoherent state was not the result of a wild night out. Instead, he claims he over-medicated on painkillers he had received from doctors following a back surgery five weeks prior to the incident.
“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” Woods said. “What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”
