The first college football playoff rankings were released on ESPN Tuesday night, and the Georgia Bulldogs are at the top.

There’s plenty to break down, but first let’s check out the top of the list.

The top 10 are as follows:

1) Georgia

2) Alabama

3) Notre Dame

4) Clemson

5) Oklahoma

6) Ohio State

7) Penn State

8) TCU

9) Wisconsin

10) Miami

Very surprising seeing Georgia at the top. I expected them to come in at second. They have a better win on the resume because of an early season victory over Notre Dame, but hard to argue they’ve been more impressive than Alabama. The Crimson Tide have been rolling over teams all season.

Miami and Wisconsin are both undefeated, but clearly the playoff committee isn’t putting a ton of weight into their weak schedules. It’s not an unfair action from the committee. The Badgers are undefeated, and winning comfortably. However, they’re not playing top teams yet. Looks like they’ll need a win in the Big Ten championship to get in at this point.

It’s also good news for Penn State that they’re at seven in the initial rankings. It means the Nittany Lions are still very much in play to get into the playoff.

Big day in college football. We’ll have to see how it all plays out down the stretch.
